I bought my first magic from Aker Corp. around 1987 -- for $99?! It
might have been a 2.x version, but was probably a 3.x version. After reading through the "black book" that came with it, it really didn't make all that much sense to me. Magic got "put on the shelf" for a couple of years.
In 1989, I finally had a reason to really learn magic, and that was to create some custom front ends for Platinum accounting. It is my understanding that at that time, Aker Corp. was actually sharing office space with {company name forgotten, maybe ABM?} that was selling Platinum. The Platinum Software company was pretty willing to advocate Magic as the tool to use for customizations.
After attending a 3-day course with Bruce Lomasky, I used magic exclusively for any type of data management projects until 2003. This includes v3, v4 (international version), v5, v6, v8 and now v9. (Played with v7, but never really got into it!)
For various reasons, I've spent the last two years working on an ASP web project. I must say, learning the object oriented concepts of ASP and ADO has certainly helped me better understand magic v9. I must also say, magic v9 is most impressive. I can't wait to see what eDev II will look like!
9/28/06 Update: Just got my CDL yesterday. It looks like I'll be driving a truck for 1 year; then we shall see what's next!
Good day.
